Reading Clues and Grid Constraints

Each row and column shows runs of filled cells in order. A clue of four means four consecutive filled cells with a gap before the next run if another number follows. Zero or blank clues mean the entire line is empty—a powerful negative constraint.

Runs must fit simultaneously with all crossings. A filled cell in a row forces the corresponding column to include that cell in its own run pattern, often eliminating column placements elsewhere.

The Overlap Technique

For a single run on a line, slide the block left and right within the grid; cells that stay filled in both extremes are definite fills. Example: a five on a ten-wide line forces the middle cell filled regardless of alignment.

Apply overlaps before guessing. Many beginners mark possibilities; overlaps produce certainties. Repeat overlaps whenever clue length exceeds half the line length or when remaining space tightens after edge fills.

Edges, Spacing, and Completed Runs

When a run touches a known fill on an edge, extend it to the clue length immediately. Mark X on cells that cannot be filled because they would violate spacing between runs—each gap needs at least one blank separator.

When a run is fully placed, mark the cells before and after as empty if required by spacing rules. Completed lines become reference points for perpendicular deductions.

Working Row and Column Together

Alternate passes: update all rows, then all columns, then repeat. Stuck lines often unlock after a single column mark propagates. Keep marks synchronized; an outdated X in one line poisons the other axis.

On large puzzles, focus on high-clue lines first—they constrain more cells early. Save ambiguous short-run lines until crossings narrow them.

Staying Accurate on Big Pictures

Use distinct notation for sure fills, sure empties, and uncertain cells if your tool allows. Zoom out periodically to recognize emerging shapes—arms, borders, symmetry—that suggest the next region to attack.

If contradictions appear, backtrack to the last certain mark rather than guessing. Good nanogram apps support undo; paper solvers should ink certainties lightly. Accuracy beats speed until patterns become automatic.

Color nanograms add a third dimension—multiple layers solved on the same grid—but line logic remains identical per color. Solve one color’s certainties first if clues are denser, then let those marks constrain the others. Timed events reward batching: complete all row overlaps, then all column overlaps, instead of toggling focus after every single cell.

Multi-Run Line Reasoning

Lines with several runs, such as two-one-two on a fifteen-wide row, require packing runs from both ends mentally and marking cells that cannot belong to any placement. Compare left-aligned and right-aligned extremes; any cell filled in both alignments is definite, just like the single-run overlap case.

When runs are short and numerous, empties between them become as informative as fills. A mandated gap of at least one blank between runs can eliminate long stretches early. Practice these multi-run lines on small puzzles before tackling poster-size artwork grids.

Save partially completed line marks in your head as questions until a perpendicular line confirms them. Provisional thinking keeps the grid clean while still letting you test hypotheses without ink clutter.
