Rules and How Runs Interact

Black cells display sum clues for runs to their right or below. Digits in a run are unique and between one and nine. A clue of sixteen in two cells must be seven and nine in some order—the only pair that fits.

Crossings link horizontal and vertical runs. A digit placed for one clue instantly affects the perpendicular sum, often eliminating combinations on the crossing run.

Combination Tables Worth Knowing

Memorize or reference common partitions: two cells summing to three must be one-two; summing to seventeen must be eight-nine. Three-cell totals have fewer options as clues approach extremes—four in three cells is one-two-one only with repeats forbidden, so only one-two-one permutations of unique digits apply within valid ranges.

List all valid digit sets for a clue length, then eliminate sets incompatible with crossing marks. Unique combinations—only one ordered set fits—should be placed immediately.

Using Crossings to Break Ties

When a horizontal run allows multiple partitions, check vertical constraints at each cell. A cell that must be large for the down clue removes small-only partitions across. This is kakuro’s core loop: translate sums into sets, narrow by crossings, place certainties.

Work high-constraint clues first—long runs with extreme sums—because they have fewer combinations. Fill easy two-cell clues early to supply digits that choke harder crossings.

Pencil Marks and Digit Elimination

Mark possible digits per cell when combinations multiply. Remove candidates when a digit is used elsewhere in the same run or when all remaining partitions exclude it. Hidden singles appear when only one digit remains legal in a cell.

Avoid repeating digits within a run even if sums temporarily seem fine—uniqueness is absolute. If stuck, recompute combinations after recent placements; one new digit often collapses a partition list.

Accuracy and Hard Puzzle Tactics

Double-check sums after finishing a run; one wrong digit propagates misleading constraints. On large puzzles, scan for magic blocks—regions where totals force well-known patterns taught in advanced kakuro guides.

Build combination fluency with timed drills on two- and three-cell clues. Faster partition recall leaves more attention for crossings, where puzzles actually open. Logic, not arithmetic speed, wins hard grids.

Thermometer-style thinking helps: high totals push digits toward nine and eight; low totals anchor ones and twos. When a run nearly fills the row, remaining cells may be forced even before you enumerate every partition—subtract placed digits from the clue sum and recompute on the shortened length.

Magic Blocks and Forced Splits

Certain clue-length pairs famously force digits—sixteen in two cells is always seven-nine, twenty-three in three often collapses after one crossing. Collect these micro-facts organically by reviewing solved puzzles rather than rote memorizing tables.

When two runs in the same row belong to different clues, never confuse their digit pools. A horizontal seven in three cells cannot reuse a digit already locked in the crossing vertical four in two cells. Cross-check both sums after each placement to keep pools disjoint.
